Manga and anime became increasingly more popular in the United States and Western countries during the 1990s. While the 80s saw Akira and Mazinger releases come over by major publishers Marvel and First, respectively, the 90s saw even more titles and artists making their way into new markets. Go Nagai was no stranger to the American audience by the late 90s, as his Mazinger and Devilman series had already been translated to English.
