During the late 1970s and entire 1980s in Japan, shojo horror was emerging as a very popular genre for its teen girls demographic. While magazines like Halloween Monthly (月刊ハロウィン) were taking American and European horror movies, TV shows and comics and twisting them into their own stories, artists like Junji Ito, Kazuo Umezu, Miyuki Saga and Kanako Inuki were emerging as fan favorites. Even before Halloween Monthly took off, there was Hibari Hit Comics. Founded in the late 1970s, the comic publisher was created to mass produce horror comics by the likes of Hideshi Hino, Norikazu Kawashima and the aforementioned Halloween Monthly crew.
Head of the Bloody Mansion is classic shojo manga done just right by Miyuki Saga.
