The Rinpa school is one of the most important and well-known institutions for Japanese painting in the country's history. Founded in the 17th century in Kyoto by two artists - Hon'ami Kōetsu and Tawaraya Sōtatsu and later consolidated into a more defined style by Ogata Kōrin and Ogata Kenzan. This style of painting is also referred to as the Kōetsu school (光悦派).
Released in 1993, this third volume of a four-volume book series focuses on the Edo period revival by Sakai Hōitsu, a painter who originated his studies at the Kanō school. His style exemplified the beauty and realism of Japanese painting, using various mediums from ukiyo-e to silk and gold-foiled paper.
