The post-war Showa era in Japan saw a rising shift in underground arts, and tattoos were starting to make their way into the mainstream for the first time. Bonten Taro, a trained tattoo artist and fashion designer, comic illustrator and movie director, published a few books starting in the 1970s that specialized in highlighting tattoos in Japan and around the world. This 1973 book, Skin Painting: Japanese Tattoo, was released with cooperation from the Yokohama Tattoo Club to explain and illustrate many different ways that tattoos are appreciated.
A Japanese text-based book, there are plenty of full-color and black-and-white photos of tattoos, tattoo designs and diagrams for tattoo wearing shown.
