Bijinga, or paintings of beautiful women, was once a very vibrant, popular genre of art during the Edo period. Even well into the Showa period, certain artists remained popular for depicting beautiful women in realistic, emotional states, but eventually the genre began to fade from mainstream art.
Born in 1965, Yasunori Ikenaga is a self taught artist in Nihonga, a style and form of painting with mineral-based pigments. His paintings of women and animals (especially cats) exist in the same nature as bijinga, showing very emotional and realistic
His 2014 art book "100 Nights Of Happiness Thinking Of You" is his first art collection of new themed works that uses the technique of self-study. Beautiful women, cats and patterned clothing in true Ikenaga style.
