Before the Transformers took America by storm, there was the pioneering mecha series Mazinger by Go Nagai created in the early 70s. Various different series, OVA/anime series, movies, video games (top tier arcade shmup if you can find it!) and more have been released since. This 1999 series Mazinger Z is a five-book collection.
